About Me

I have played tennis for over 40 years, and have competed in USTA Leagues, singles and doubles competitions from 3.0 to 4.5. The game is a true passion of mine and coaching the game extends that passion to others. During my professional career as a law enforcement officer, I competed in tennis after work and during my time off. The friends I made playing tennis encouraged me to take on the role of an assistant high school tennis coach in 2006. After retiring from my professional career in 2018, I immediately became a head coach for high school tennis. Currently I serve as a Tennis Teaching Professional at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Missouri. As a member of the Professional Tennis Registry, in addition to a being a certified instructor, I also have a certificate in coach mentoring. My philosophy for coaching is: Playing tennis is a precious gift, and coaching tennis changes the live's of the people we teach and will last a lifetime; sharing the gift is our responsibility; this gift involves athletic abilities, knowledge, humor, light-heartedness and fun.

What my lessons are like

A typical lesson starts with assessing a person's current level of play. Beginners start by learning dimensions of the court, names of strokes etc., and then performing the forehand by drop hitting and analysis. More advanced players will typical start by assessing areas that need improvement, whether that be consistency or shot specific, footwork specific, or racquet work specific activities.

How to prepare

To prepare for a lesson, always monitor your fitness level and check with a physician to make sure you can tolerate the physical activity required. Bring an appropriate tennis racquet, junior or adult size, and wear court shoes. in addition, it is a good idea to bring a towel and water to drink. I recommend attaching a sport band to retain eyeglasses if worn. If outside, sunglasses should be considered along with sunscreen and light clothing.
